Abstract:

It has been claimed that an important factor in the recent revival of the European extreme right is the attraction of charismatic leaders. Arguably the two most-cited examples of such leaders are Jean-Marie Le Pen in Western Europe and Vladimir Zhirinovsky in Eastern Europe. Using two synoptic case studied of these leaders, this paper argues that the classic Weberian conception of mass-messianic charisma has little relevance. However, it is possible to re-conceptualise charisma so that it remains an important weapon in the social scientists' analytical armoury.
