Abstract:
|
Scholars have considered the political implications of economic globalization, reaching a wide variety of forecasts about the likely consequences of globalization. In the context of advanced industrialized countries, globalization is expected to shape not only the actions of national politicians but also the beliefs and choices made by citizens. There is more inference than evidence to support these expectations about citizens, however. In this paper, we review and extend a project that has resulted in a series of papers that trace the micro-level effects assumed by the macro-level literature. Our project seeks to substantiate three micro-level "links" connecting macroeconomic change to national policy consequences: first, the effect of economic change on feelings of economic security within general public; second, the effect of economic insecurity on citizens? preferences for various matters of public policy; and, third (new in this paper), the effect of the already studied variables on voter choice. |
