Abstract:

The establishment of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, and the introduction of proposed legislation in Congress, however, touched off a fierce public debate. In the ensuing months, the initiative died the death of a thousand cuts. As of this writing, the proposed legislation (already stripped of most of its core substantive provisions) awaits an uncertain future in the U.S. Senate.
