Abstract:
|
Through environmental accounting, a precautionary orientation and widespread environmental education, governments, businesses and citizens might come to understand how their long-term self-interests, and the interests of progeny, depend upon their acting sustainably. In turn, we face the challenge of investigating how morally and politically viable uses of coercion, the employment of economic incentives and/or disincentives, and the cultivation of moral obligations and/or emotive attachments might allow governments, businesses and citizens to overcome collective action problems, thus redirecting behavior into more sustainable paths. |

| Science and Sustainability Leslie Paul Thiele University of Forida Draft: Prepared for presentation at the 2002 Annual Meeting of the American Political Science Association. Copyright APSA. Sustainable development in its traditional for mulation is the task of meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In some sense the primary challenge of sustainable development is the enormous task of translating this ludicrously general mandate into practical guidelines for action |
| An Analysis " Journal of Environmental Education 17 (Winter 1985/1986): 3140. 39 I list moral obligations and emotive attachments in the same category notwithstanding a venerable tradition of moral philosophy reaching its apogee with Kant that insists that morality is discovered solely through reason and has little if any relation to our emotional orientations. Notwithstanding such deontological claims I adhere to a more Humean perspective: without emotional attachments to dictate a universe of desired ends reason is largely powerless. |
