Abstract:
|
In the Spring 2001 semester, a new course was launched at the University of Central Florida - Politics in Film. Due to positive response it was repeated the following semester. This paper analyzes and evaluates this innovative course discussing both its particular objectives and approach, and the purposes it serves the department within the broader university. Lastly, it discusses some changes that were made to the course between its first and second offerings and additional changes that can be made to tailor it to particular purposes.
This course uses popular, mass-released films to illustrate how the mass public, especially those not otherwise interested, obtains information about politics. It also addresses the many ways in which politics are conceptualized. In this course, students are exposed to several genres of film and the works of several important directors, some of whom produce films with recurrent, politically relevant themes. |
