Abstract:
|
The purpose of this article is to study how the Korean military as an institution and also as a conglomerate of factions had evolved under the Park Chung Hee¡¯s reign since 1963. The former is the military as the last pillar that had tried to build up defense capabilities to cope with security threat and the latter is as factions that became involved in politics through political crises and politicized enough to oppress the civil society.
The military as an institution grew as Koreans accomplished a miraculous economic development. Its defense capabilities had been enhanced to the point South Korea could afford 100% of her own defense expenditures in 1978. In a series of security threats such as provocation by North Korea, the Vietnam War, the so-called Nixon Doctrine and eventually the withdrawal of the 7th Infantry Division of USFK, Park¡¯s regime made every effort to get military support and commitment from the United States and seemingly succeeded in modernizing the Korean military. |
