Abstract:
|
Political realism can be characterized as a family of theories in international relations. Many distinct and sometimes contradictory theories are considered part of this realist family. Liberalism, on the other hand, lacks a rich articulation of its theoretical expanse and is often equated solely to ideas of Kantian republicanism. There are, however, several important and distinct strands of liberal theory. In this paper I will elaborate two of these strands by comparing the works of Kant and Paine. While Kant can be characterized as a liberal cautiously optimistic about progress in global politics, Paine's cosmopolitan thought is far more optimistic and promises a rapid transformation of the global system through the spread of democracy and reason. A careful examination of the differences in the international thought of these two Enlightenment figures provides the foundations for two distinct liberal theories of international relations. |
