Abstract:

Bangladeshi International Labor Migration: Patterns, Trends and Policies M. M. A. Zaman, Independent Scholar, Bangladesh Bangladeshi migrants have joined in the temporary labour migration system of East and South-East Asia since the commencement of the large scale labour migration in the late 1980s. However, there is a void in knowledge of the trends and patterns of Bangladeshi labour migration to this relatively new destination in Asia. There is also a dearth of research on the experiences of foreign workers in general and Bangladeshi migrant workers in particular under different 'migrant worker programs' (e.g. work permit, trainee) in this region. I examine comparatively the experiences of Bangladeshi migrants in seven host countries of East and Southeast Asia. This type of comparative study of particular migrant community will adduce insights into the various aspects of temporary migration and contribute to the formulation of consistent 'migrant worker program' at the regional level. Findings reveal that almost all receiving countries are beset with the problem of illegal migration. The paper suggests that the problem of illegal migration cannot be solved without tackling the gross exploitation and unfair treatment of legal migrant workers and devising systematic 'migrant worker program' with adequate appreciation of human aspects in the policy principles.
