Abstract:

Religion and culture have become more salient in world politics in the twenty-first century, as public identities find roots amid the dynamics of globalization. Confucian Ethic explanations of modernization and Asian Human Rights discourses bear the imprint of these roots. Liberation Theology in Latin America and Civil Religion in the United States impinge on global change, as well. Classic issues of international security have been transformed by factors of identity, religious faith, and ethnic encounters. While terrorism and economic growth grab headlines, capacities for engagement in the processes of global transition are often overlooked. Social sources of power, identity, and meaning are found in the variables of religion and culture around the Pacific Rim. Islamic politics in Southeast Asia, the growth of Christianity in Korea and China, multiculturalism in pluralist polities are among the topics that must be added to an agenda of development, democracy, interdependence, and partnership.
