Abstract:
|
How does the evocation of memory work in the enactment of security (and its subject) in narrative? This paper will explore how memory and subjectivity are configured in distinct discourses of danger and raise questions about the political ramifications of such temporal constellations. Specifically, this paper will offer a reading of US security discourses in relation to the public disclosure of the torture in May, 2004 of detainees by US soldiers in Abu Graib military prison in Iraq. Special attention will be paid to how gender markings work in the establishment of a remembered subject of security (the US) in the midst of danger from both 'within' and 'beyond' its borders. The paper will show how re-membering the role and identity of the US military in the safeguarding of the ''subject' of security becomes a main story line in this narrative and crucial for the Bush administration's legitimacy, as well as the US continued presence in its war on terror (and torture) in Iraq. |
