Gender and Leadership: The Politics of Citizenship and Economic Development
Unformatted Document Text:  19 It is very gratifying for us because we know that we are helping our indigenous brothersbecause the government says that they help the indigenous, but the reality is somethingelse, they don’t give support…for us, as Barzonistas, we expect justice, justice foreveryone. Therefore, El Barzón has become a school of sorts in formulating and creating citizens that are politically conscientious. When the women talked about the goals of the organization, their voices articulated how the organization engaged in this objective. Julia explains to me when I asked about the goals of the organization: I would describe them as education for the people, as an opening of our eyes to what ishappening in the society. Because before El Barzón we believed whatever we heard andsaw, we did not know there was a Congress, we knew of the building, but we did notknow what they talked about there. So, the principal goal of El Barzón is to open theconscious of the people, so that they know that we have representatives. As Liliana says, they work for us, not the other way around. They are not the authority, and we have theright to say something is wrong. We have learned, learned, and learned, and now we seethat we are people, that we are represented, that we have obligations, not just that theCongress creates more rights. That is the difference. Veronica tells me that it is important that the members of the organization are ‘thinking people.’ She continues by saying: For El Barzón it is really important that the people learn because it is the only way wecan change, together with learning and forming a degree of consciousness in the peoplebecause we need to have people that have a conscious. Without this we would neverhave accomplished anything, not even one of our goals. The people learn, they learntheir rights, and we don’t return to being stepped on. Thus, one of the important outcomes of participation has been not only a sense of individual empowerment, but also a translation of this empowerment to working toward social change. In this way, empowerment for the women has gone beyond the family level and has led them to work in empowering the larger community. Their empowerment, I suggest, has also led them to become leaders. Leadership, traditionally defined, is those ‘who hold titled positions, have the power over members, make decisions on behalf of the organization, and are perceived by the public and the state as the leaders” (Robnett 1996:1664). While none of these women has titles per se in the organization, they play a key role in maintaining the unity of the organization and in Robnett’s terms, the women play a bridging role between formal leadership and the larger membership.

It is very gratifying for us because we know that we are helping our indigenous brothers
because the government says that they help the indigenous, but the reality is something
else, they don’t give support…for us, as Barzonistas, we expect justice, justice for
everyone.
Therefore, El Barzón has become a school of sorts in formulating and creating citizens that are
politically conscientious. When the women talked about the goals of the organization, their voices
articulated how the organization engaged in this objective. Julia explains to me when I asked about the
goals of the organization:
I would describe them as education for the people, as an opening of our eyes to what is
happening in the society. Because before El Barzón we believed whatever we heard and
saw, we did not know there was a Congress, we knew of the building, but we did not
know what they talked about there. So, the principal goal of El Barzón is to open the
conscious of the people, so that they know that we have representatives. As Liliana says,
they work for us, not the other way around. They are not the authority, and we have the
right to say something is wrong. We have learned, learned, and learned, and now we see
that we are people, that we are represented, that we have obligations, not just that the
Congress creates more rights. That is the difference.
Veronica tells me that it is important that the members of the organization are ‘thinking people.’ She
continues by saying:
For El Barzón it is really important that the people learn because it is the only way we
can change, together with learning and forming a degree of consciousness in the people
because we need to have people that have a conscious. Without this we would never
have accomplished anything, not even one of our goals. The people learn, they learn
their rights, and we don’t return to being stepped on.
Thus, one of the important outcomes of participation has been not only a sense of individual
empowerment, but also a translation of this empowerment to working toward social change. In this way,
empowerment for the women has gone beyond the family level and has led them to work in empowering
the larger community. Their empowerment, I suggest, has also led them to become leaders. Leadership,
traditionally defined, is those ‘who hold titled positions, have the power over members, make decisions
on behalf of the organization, and are perceived by the public and the state as the leaders” (Robnett
1996:1664). While none of these women has titles per se in the organization, they play a key role in
maintaining the unity of the organization and in Robnett’s terms, the women play a bridging role between
formal leadership and the larger membership.
