Abstract:

This paper reviews the literature on the resources wars in Central Africa and applies the concepts developed by Charles Tilly in 1985 as an alternate mode of analysis. Much of the writing on the current conflicts in Central Africa focuses either on the failed state syndrome or the rapacious nature of individual actors. This paper challenges these assumptions and proposes instead that these conflicts can also be viewed as a process of state making which, while lethal to many, is nevertheless quite in line with similar processes in earlier times. A crucial difference, however, is globalized nature of the context in which these conflicts are embedded.
