This study examines several hypothesis regarding the effects that the racial make up of a disaster-stricken country will have on both the volume and content of New York Times coverage of foreign disasters. Race does appear to have statistically significant, but substantively modest effects. However, the relationships identified do not always agree with the testing hypotheses derived from recent discussions and debates. A proportionally higher black population increases substantially the overall level of coverage of the disaster, decreases the likelihood that suffering will be reported and increases the likelihood that foreign assistance will be reported.
