Abstract:
|
Researchers with an interest in policy outcomes must study and differentiate among individual large firms because their varied preferences are a necessary element of these outcomes. Vague references to market pressures or generic private sector interests are not enough as these do not capture differences among firms nor their impact. This research paper will lay out reasons for scholars of international studies to study and differentiate firms, and for business executives to learn from international studies. Even in the traditional study of government, one must first define the national interest before one can study its defense, and firms play an enormous role in shaping state preferences. Studies of government which exclude firms will not elucidate this causal source of policy unless they deliberately look for it. Whether one loves large firms, admires them, hates them, leads them, just works for, or studies them, large multi-divisional corporations were among the most political-important and enduring social units of the 20th century. |
