policies. Unlike many social institutions commonly studied in introductory law and
political science courses, including governmental bureaucracies, regimes, ideologies, and
even countries, these firms have survived the Great Depression, major world wars, the
Cold War, the gold standard and its demise, decolonization, and two waves of democracy
and reversals. Surely they have earned a place in scholars' vocabulary and analysis.
Caveat lector--and, one hopes, caveat scholars, who might unthinkingly rely on the
press to frame the questions they ask, as well as the answers they propose. Social scientists
should write about firms, but not necessarily as the firms--nor their critics--would like.
