Abstract:
|
This paper assesses the policy which the Bush administration adapted towards East Asia. Policy is broken into four categories: overarching themes, involving the relationship between economics and security, non-proliferation, and the role of force; sub-regional policies, including U.S. policy towards Northeast, Southeast, and mainland Asia; military policy, including issues such as the future of U.S. conventional forces in the region, and missile defense; and possible crises, including on the Korean peninsula, over the Straits, in Indonesia, or in the Philippines; and the war on terrorism. The author discusses continuities and discontinuities of the current US policy with prior administrations, the impact of domestic politics, and the likely future of American policy towards the region. |
