Land Tenure as a Determinant of Civil Wars

Abstract Land tenure and land-related issues are investigated and tested as potential determinants of civil war onset. If most of civil wars occur in agrarian and developing countries, where a high proportion of the population lives in the countryside, and if the
‘masses’ of rebels and
supporters are lower class peasants, land is the actual
“currency” which can be translated into
political power in those societies. Land can induce peasants to be risk inclined and participate in a civil war, as well prevent conflict from occurring in the first place. This variable should be approached in a more systematic way than it has been studied until now. Interesting findings indicate that both small land owners and landless people participate as rebels hoping to change the system; demographic trends can accelerate rebellion; low productivity per hectare may push to civil war; incumbent anocratic repression favors collective agrarian violence; and more.
Paper prepared for presentation on ISA Convention in Honolulu, HI. I would like to thank Steven Shewfelt for
his assistance, and also Stathis Kalyvas, Jose Cheibub, James Scott, and the participants of the
“Order, Conflict,
and Violence
” workshop of the Political Science Dept., Yale University, for their valuable suggestions and
advices.
