Abstract:

What is the future of Russia as a major power in Eurasia? Will the post Soviet republics in Eastern Europe and the South Caucasus join the security infrastructure of the Atlantic West, or they will remain under Russia's post imperial control? Will Central Asia be a space of partnership or competition between Russia and the West? Where the borderline between the security system of the West and the Greater Middle East will pass? Will the new security challenges in the Post Soviet East and the Greater Middle East cause deeper divisions between Europe and the US, or the transatlantic unity will be strengthened in a longer term perspective? Those are part of the important questions, reflecting the deep power shifts, caused by the twin enlargements of NATO and the EU to the East of Europe. How will the NATO mission evolve in this new environment? The future of the security system of the West will be decided on the eastern borderlines of the North Atlantic Alliance. The success or the failure of the enlarged EU in the next decade will constitute a major factor to the evolution of NATO from a militaru alliance to a broader security system.
