Abstract:
|
Why do some developing states continue to use violence, including extrajudicial executions, disappearances, and massacres, against their civilians while others do not? Drawing from research on related topics, including research on civil wars, insurgency movements, death squad activities, and state consolidation, several explanations do exist but have not yet been tested adequately. In my paper, I evaluate and test these conventional wisdom explanations using world-wide data of state violence against civilians between 1946-2003. Preliminary results suggest that there are different key variables associated with the onset of state violence, depending upon the duration and intensity of each violent episode. It appears that while conventional wisdom may hold true for some types of state violence, other less-studied variables may also be strongly correlated. |
