of philosophy, just as it is not that of the city. Aristophanes attempts to do through laughter that
which cannot be done wholly through thought – to educate philosophy and politics about their
mutual need of one another. The first step towards doing this, as we have seen, is to warn each
about the shortcomings of the other.
