Cashing in on sin? You bet: Assessing the Impact of Religion on State Ballot Questions
Unformatted Document Text:  2 Abstract: In addition to voting for favorite candidates, Oklahomans faced eight ballot questions when theywent to the polls November 2, 2004. Four of these questions can be considered moral issues. They include the establishment of a lottery, a tax increase on cigarettes, a gay marriage ban, andthe institution of gaming machines in tribal casinos and racetracks. Some of these issues (statelottery and gaming) have faced stiff opposition from religious organizations and have beendefeated in the past. This paper looks at a number of factors and assesses their electoral impacton the referenda. Specifically, the analysis examines religious affiliation (Catholics, Evangelicaland Mainstream Protestants) in the 77 Oklahoma counties along with other socioeconomic andgeographic data. The study hypothesizes that counties with larger populations of EvangelicalProtestants will tend to vote against the gaming issues while voting for the traditional marriagequestion.

In addition to voting for favorite candidates, Oklahomans faced eight ballot questions when they
went to the polls November 2, 2004. Four of these questions can be considered moral issues.
They include the establishment of a lottery, a tax increase on cigarettes, a gay marriage ban, and
the institution of gaming machines in tribal casinos and racetracks. Some of these issues (state
lottery and gaming) have faced stiff opposition from religious organizations and have been
defeated in the past. This paper looks at a number of factors and assesses their electoral impact
on the referenda. Specifically, the analysis examines religious affiliation (Catholics, Evangelical

Protestants will tend to vote against the gaming issues while voting for the traditional marriage
question.
