Abstract:

This paper examines the influence of international shocks or militarized interstate disputes on European political party manifestos since 1945. Previous research has not been fully theoretically developed, and this topic has strong implications for understanding external factors influencing party change. I test my hypotheses, which detail a change in foreign policy issue saliency with empirical quantitative evidence from 1945 to 1998. In turn, I analyze the significance of my evidence and its implications and find support for a correlation between European disputes and subsequent increased party emphasis on strengthening and improving military forces.
