Abstract:
|
Kennan is a realist, a conservative, a pragmatist, and a pessimist. All three traits shape his attitudes towards foreign policy. He distrusts revolution, idealism, pure theory and optimism. He puts his trust in stability, and elitism; and he thinks American interests should decide policy. Practical as well as scholarly experience, he believes, is necessary to understand international affairs properly. His realism is rooted in a pessimism that almost always recognizes the worst-case scenario and rejects strategies based on hope. The result of Kennan’s pessimism is a cautionary foreign policy based on realistic limitations. |
