Abstract:
|
In order to frame the creation of the Yugoslav state, I will employ international relations balancing theories to determine if it is power or threat that could lead to the emergence of a Yugoslav-like federation. I will assert that Yugoslav emergence was an act of balancing against threats in the international system, not simply against powers. While there is considerable overlap between these two concepts in the case for Yugoslavia, there is a considerable threat from surrounding non-powers that loom as unification motivators. I will also employ the discussion of bargaining theory to explain the distribution of power in the creation of Yugoslavia. Namely, I will argue that the distribution of power in the Yugoslav Republic was not solely a reflection of the distribution of capabilities, but were powerfully influenced by domestic political conditions that allowed for the emergence of a Serbian dominant centralized Yugoslavia. |

| Yugoslavia's Unification Kim Bowers SWPSA Conference 2005 The subject of Balkan state unification as culminated in the Yugoslav state presents an interesting question for scholars of international relations and constitutional creation. First we are confronted by a seeming anomaly--while we certainly see many states break up into ethnically or nationally homogeneous units we rarely view the opposite effect where regions unify to form a singular state. The study of Yugoslavia helps us to understand how such integration of autonomous |
