ABSTRACT
In the recent histories of the United States and the United Kingdom, there have been relativelyfew electoral victories for maverick candidates – i.e. those who challenge the existing politicalparties from outside their bounds. Yet, in the past four years, there have been two high profilemavericks to win major elections, Jesse Ventura as Governor of Minnesota and Ken Livingstoneas Mayor of London. Utilizing multivariate analysis, we examine voting behavior in each ofthese cases to deduce causes, commonalities, and lessons for future candidates. We find thatboth candidates enjoyed broad based electoral support and benefited from electoral systemsfavorable to third party voting.
Prepared for presentation at the Southwestern Political Science Association Meeting, March 23-26 2005, New Orleans, LA.
