Abstract:
|
This research looks at an innovative measure of campaign activity in an analysis of campaign effects. I use data from the Campaign Finance Analysis Project to identify spending on advertising and grassroots campaigning in Congressional elections from 1992 to 2002. I also use data from the Federal Election Commission to identify advertising and grassroots campaign spending by state political parties over the same time period. With these new measures I test for turnout and vote choice effects with aggregate and individual level data. I find that candidate campaigns have important effects at the individual level and in the aggregate while party campaigns have little impact on turnout or vote choice. |
