Abstract:

As new technologies become more and more used to as tools for teaching and learning in colleges and universities we become curious as to whether and how their use actually enhances learning. One approach that might be helpful is to consider classical treatments of the relationship between technology and education. This paper presents an interpretation of the image of the divided line as developed in Books Six and Seven of Plato’s Republic as an aid to helping us to think actively and carefully about the goals that the new technologies might serve and about some of the ways in which they might facilitate reaching those goals.

A Classical Perspective on Technology for Learning and Teaching about Politics Robert Webking The University of Texas at El Paso Prepared for the 2006 American Political Science Association Conference on Teaching and Learning Washington DC February 18- 20 2006 NOTE: An enhanced html version of this paper is available at www.fairspeech.com/ctl. In recent years colleges and universities have increasingly made use of new technologies to enhance teaching and learning. Both faculty and students have found themselves intrigued and excited
for thought and understanding to appreciate what is in a way that the unaided senses alone do not permit. Thus the Republic can give us images to help us realize that the use of the new technologies can have differing effects positive and not depending on whether they are used well to teach or used instead to obscure the need for teaching and learning. We are right to try to use the power well but also right to remind
