Note: Nov. 18 is the deadline for requesting scheduling of final exams which conflict or are 3rd exam in 24 hours.
Thanksgiving holiday (Nov. 19 to Nov.27) Enjoy it! Nov. 29. Reading, and Assessing Research Reports: Beginning of in-class preparation for Final Exam. Read Schutt, Appendices B and C, followed by the research report at the end of Appendix C: “Housework in Marital and NonMarital Households” by Scott J. South and Glenna Spitze, reprinted (with permission) from the American Sociological Review, 1994, Vol. 59 (June: 327-347).
Homework: Schutt CD-Rom interactive exercises on “reviewing and reporting research” Assignment 3 research design is due. Dec. 1 Visual misrepresentations Read: Monmonier, chaps 5-10. Discussion of how maps and other graphics can clarify, distort or mislead. Dec. 6 First reading of a scholarly article selected for final exam. Exam Aids: Writing essay exams. Writing with computers. Dec. 4 Reading Day I will mail you the an article from a political science journal to interpret and assess for your final exam. For your final, you will have to describe and explain how the report is written and evaluate it. Does the format of the report conform to the standard form for writing research reports? Describe the major sections in the report and explain the order of their presentation in terms of the logic of writing research reports that typically is used in the social sciences journals. Be able to independently describe and evaluate each section of the report on its merits, in terms of relevant criteria and information presented in this course.
