Abstract:
|
I designed a service learning project to complement and enhance my course, Congress & the Presidency. In addition to normal classroom assignments, students were asked to work with a faith-based service organization (FBO) of their choice in the Kansas City metro area. In addition to performing the service of their chosen organization, the students were asked to write a case study of their respective FBO based upon structured questions, interviews and personal observations. After completion of the case study, the students participated in a classroom simulation (practicum) in which they played the roles of US Senators. Their objective was to debate, amend and vote on a bill passed by the US House of Representatives that would permit faith-based organizations to apply for and receive federal money to help fund their service work. The exercise had a positive impact on the students’ understanding of the legislative/policy process, church-state issues, and civic engagement. |
