this data would, by their very nature, be overlooked by survey instruments. What we can know
about a community via survey data is necessarily limited to the imagination and/or research
agenda of the researcher. Therefore, clues to a particular communities’ worldview as transmitted
via folktales, creation stories, personal narratives, and the like are generally not considered and
where they are used are seen as less credible, useful, or scientific.
Consequently, in taking for granted the “knowability” of large-n studies, researchers do
not generally question the subjective, fractional understanding gained by survey instruments.
