Abstract: Service learning projects tend to narrowly focused and not widely used in political science classes for fear of politicizing students. In order to avoid these problems, I implemented a service learning project in my Urban Politics and Policy class focused on developing a master plan in a local community. While the experience had some limitations, it seems to have had a positive impact on my students’ understanding of the material covered in class and to have increased their civic engagement. I believe that service learning projects focused on master planning can be of use in many general political science classes.
Paper presented at the 2006 APSA Conference on Teaching and Learning, Washington, DC: February 17-20.
