Service Learning in Urban Politics and Policy: Incorporating the Big Picture
Unformatted Document Text:  Seminar: Urban Politics and Policy PSC 477 Fall 2005Final Report (200 points total) There will be three components to the grade for this assignment. Draft: First, each student will post a rough draft of their portion of the final report on WebCT. This rough draft will be worth 100 points total. The draft of the report should focus on three main things. First, you should provide an assessment of the key assets and problems in the area you studied. You should cite information from all of the interviews that were completed, both in your group and from any of the other groups as they relate to your issue area, as well as information from class, the book readings and WebCT posted readings. Second, discuss what city actors, such as groups and governmental officials, can and should do to work towards fixing these problems. Think about how they might use the assets mentioned to help address these issues. Refer to your course readings to talk about how city leaders might go about tackling these problems (see Hallsmith for suggestions on plans of action) as well as the limits city leaders may face in these endeavors (see Pelissero). You should also discuss what the literature says about the success of these sorts of actions (refer to your readings on the specific policy areas). Finally, I want you to think about how the university might be able to help the city as it works towards creating a better future. What assets does the university have that might be brought to bear on these problems? Are there ways that the university might better coordinate its activities? How might the university become more involved? Refer to the readings from early this semester on the COPC grants (looking at winning grant applications might give you some ideas here) as well as the ideas from Hallsmith and the websites that discuss sustainability. This draft is due on December 17 th and should be submitted by posting it in the draft final reports discussion board. Feedback: Next, each student is expected to read the drafts of all other students in the class and post constructive criticism on WebCT. I will assess the amount of feedback postings and the quality of these postings; they are worth 25 points. I will assess the amount and quality of these postings on December 19 th . Final: Last, each group will create a final report for their group. Each group should combine the best parts of the draft reports from team members and should also incorporate suggested changes based on the posted feedback from their peers. 75 points of the grade on this component of the assignment will be based on how adequately you integrate the draft reports (you cannot simply paste together each of the reports; they should read like a cohesive whole) and how adequately you respond to posted suggestions. The final report will be due on December 22 nd at the end of the final examination period, or 11 a.m. 22
