Conceptualizing Parents as Victims of their Children: the founding of the False Memory Syndrome Foundation.
Unformatted Document Text:  Packard Page 1 1/15/2003 Abstract The False Memory Syndrome Foundation (FMSF) is a non-profit organization opposed to “adult/children” who make claims of childhood sexual and family abuse, but the organization is structured , functions and provides the same type of support services as rape, incest and other abuse support groups provide. This paper presents the FMSF as simply another support group – a very successful and dominating one - for parents who believe they are victims of abuse by their children. I also ponder whether inexpensive internet and video technology in a time of high unemployment encourages a “home” or “cottage” industry of child pornography that generates parents who would have vested interests in joining the FMSF in order to provide themselves with some protection in case their children remember some kind of abuse later in life. These are the highlights of this paper titled “Conceptualizing Parents as Victims of their Children: the Founding of The False Memory Syndrome Foundation.” To summarize, this paper describes the FMSF’s organization and goals, then explains in detail the way it was founded by the actions of specific angry parents in a particular family dispute and ponders the social consequences, the meaning and the future of this organization. Key words for indexing are: parents, children, organization, founding, evidence, pornography, repressed memory. Outline Controlling Idea or Theme: This paper examines the founding of the False Memory Syndrome Foundation by two parents who founded one of the most successful survivor groups in America by advocating for parents who claim to have been or who are afraid of being, accused by their adult/children of having sexually abused their children.

Abstract
The False Memory Syndrome Foundation (FMSF) is a non-profit organization opposed
to “adult/children” who make claims of childhood sexual and family abuse, but the
organization is structured , functions and provides the same type of support services as
rape, incest and other abuse support groups provide. This paper presents the FMSF as
simply another support group – a very successful and dominating one - for parents who
believe they are victims of abuse by their children. I also ponder whether inexpensive
internet and video technology in a time of high unemployment encourages a “home” or
“cottage” industry of child pornography that generates parents who would have vested
interests in joining the FMSF in order to provide themselves with some protection in case
their children remember some kind of abuse later in life. These are the highlights of this
paper titled “Conceptualizing Parents as Victims of their Children: the Founding of The
False Memory Syndrome Foundation.” To summarize, this paper describes the FMSF’s
organization and goals, then explains in detail the way it was founded by the actions of
specific angry parents in a particular family dispute and ponders the social consequences,
the meaning and the future of this organization. Key words for indexing are: parents,
children, organization, founding, evidence, pornography, repressed memory.
Outline
Controlling Idea or Theme: This paper examines the founding of the False Memory
Syndrome Foundation by two parents who founded one of the most successful survivor
groups in America by advocating for parents who claim to have been or who are afraid of
being, accused by their adult/children of having sexually abused their children.
