Abstract:

Benefits are used by organizations to recruit the best candidates. As choices of benefits increase, the field of benefits communication has become more complex. Complicating this trend is the lack of professional communication specialists equipped to take advantage of emerging media channels and design communication-based benefits program suitable for employees. Most of the literature regarding benefits communication involves tips and descriptive anecdotes explaining how one organization or another is approaching the challenge. It was the aim of this project to broaden understanding of the benefits communication process. We conducted a comprehensive survey of organizations to describe benefits communication approaches. The survey addressed functional approaches, categories of benefits provided, materials and channel employed, and managerial perception of effectiveness of benefits communication. The results indicated that most organizations tend to use the most convenient but not the most effective benefits communication program.
