Augustine’s Cup: Boundary Conditions and Relocating Science in a Post-postmodern World
Unformatted Document Text:  the exclusive privilege of any one such system. It is skeptical in its insistence that no single system or mode of inquiry is sufficient, but it is not skepticism in that it does not exclude committed engagement with a system of thought so long as one recognizes the uncertainties and limitations inherent in any single system. It is syncretic in its sympathy for disparate modes of thought, though it is not syncretic in that it does not necessarily require the fusion or synthesis of disparate systems--although creative relations become more possible when systems of thought are recognized as not necessarily competitive or mutually exclusive. It is sensible without making claims as being common sense, which is too often an automatic dependence on systems of thought and assumption of which we may be only partially conscious. Above all, it is a perspective regarding intellectual systems and modes of inquiry, and is not a system of thought. It certainly possible—indeed, it is almost certain—that different people can share this perspective while having divergent, even wildly divergent, beliefs in which they are invested. I would like to think, however, that if they share this perspective, they could communicate civilly and respectfully despite the divergences, and perhaps from those differences at the very least learn more about each other and perhaps about themselves.
