Borderland Selves: Rethinking Identity in Contemporary Global/Local Articulations
Unformatted Document Text:  interval, or spacing (the becoming-space of time) and temporalization (the becoming-time of space). Contingency is thefore the realm of the event, of emergence, it is both and at the same time product and process, it is determined and determining, both singular and chained to a constellation of relationships. The contingent is also the domain of “experience”, however not of and by a subject – as emerging from consciousness – but rather as transpersonal, as that which therefore mediates and articulates the individual and the social. In this sense, contingency does not imply a rejection of historicity and historically produced conditions of existence; rather, it implies that historicity and conditions of existence, their effectivity, relevance and meaning, can only be understood within and in relation to a particular conjucture. As such, historical conditions (or, more broadly, whatever we think as effecting something else) are always constructed retrospectively, after the fact, always specified (and specifiable) in the context of occurence. From this perspective, identities (personal or collective), the local and global, although situated, cannot be thought in the context of contemporary scenarios uniquely in terms of discrete entities, of points, of products. Contemporary social and cultural formations are too fluid, too volatile and interconnected to fit such static and mechanistic characterization. Rather, we need to think identity, global and local in their very process of production, as borderlands.

interval, or spacing (the becoming-space of time) and temporalization (the becoming-time of
space). Contingency is thefore the realm of the event, of emergence, it is both and at the
same time product and process, it is determined and determining, both singular and chained
to a constellation of relationships. The contingent is also the domain of “experience”,
however not of and by a subject – as emerging from consciousness – but rather as
transpersonal, as that which therefore mediates and articulates the individual and the social.
In this sense, contingency does not imply a rejection of historicity and historically produced
conditions of existence; rather, it implies that historicity and conditions of existence, their
effectivity, relevance and meaning, can only be understood within and in relation to a
particular conjucture. As such, historical conditions (or, more broadly, whatever we think as
effecting something else) are always constructed retrospectively, after the fact, always
specified (and specifiable) in the context of occurence.
From this perspective, identities (personal or collective), the local and global,
although situated, cannot be thought in the context of contemporary scenarios uniquely in
terms of discrete entities, of points, of products. Contemporary social and cultural
formations are too fluid, too volatile and interconnected to fit such static and mechanistic
characterization. Rather, we need to think identity, global and local in their very process of
production, as borderlands.
