Fokes (folks): friendly acquaintances, “very cool people.” Fokes may be members of a certain clique, but may not engage in one-on-one interaction. Pahtnas are always fokes, but fokes may not necessarily be pahtnas. Friend: Sheena uses this term to ventriloquate Natalia’s use of the word. Natalia does not make the same distinctions as Sheena in her usage of friend. If necessary, Natalia will emphasize that a certain person, Nicki, is her “best, best friend,” a person Sheena might refer to as a pahtna. Hella: derived from “hell of”. An intensifier similar to “very.” On the East Coast, “hella” is replaced by “mad” or “crazy.” Because the term is derived from a swear word, children often use the term “hecka”, especially around adults. Jump someone: to beat someone up Pahtnas (partners): close friend. Someone she interacts with on a daily basis and share intimate details. Pahtnas often spend time together one-on-one. Suck it: a nice way of saying “fuck it” Talking shit: Saying facetious things. Not meant to really hurt anybody, just for the sake of arousing some kind of reaction out of others.
