"Smack Talk" How do players learn the complex rules of social interaction, invent their own resources to enhance their experience, and use what they have learned to bring about a group adherence to text? Advanced players have developed skills in their social interaction that help them to contextualize their experience of the virtual reality games. They have developed forms of social interaction that reproduce the militaristic aspects of the BattleTech property, their games, and the spirit of sportsmanship. Advanced players use their knowledge and the competitive stance between players to generate verbal duels, or challenges to game. The duels are a recognizable genre of speech called "smack talk," which is talk that can be likened to a slap on the face before a contest. The verbal duel serves as a frame for their entire gaming experience. A frame is any situation where people adopt roles and a stance towards others and produces a set of expectations that allow everyone involved knowledge about what is or is not proper in that context. A verbal duel at Virtual World should produce a game. The duel adds a sense of excitement to the game that the technology alone cannot produce. If a challenge is issued, the only honorable action is to play a game as a matter of resolution. Of course, not every gaming experience begins with a duel. Players may initiate a game in many different ways – by sending out an invitation, attending a regulars' night, showing up and seeing who is there, etc. The duel, however, is a special genre of invitation that has its roots in the book series, which were released earlier than the virtual reality game.
