In order to achieve even this adherence to the ideology of textualism, players must attain a certain level of competency. A pattern of development can be established to account for the socialization that occurs as a person moves from novice to intermediate and then on to expert levels. It is the experts who participate in the special events and contests. Virtual World created a special setting, a spirit of the game, rules and a social hierarchy based on mission levels and awards, out of which social conventions were established by dedicated fans. All of these components act as frame, or a guide to expectations, to social interaction among the participants. Table 1.1 illustrates how elements of the frame can be separated by the length of time a player has been exposed to BattleTech. The phases were constructed from qualitative interviews with pilots.
