Framing media mergers in France and the United States
Unformatted Document Text:  Framing media mergers in France and the United States 20 coders is bilingual, a native speaker of English as well as French, and coded the American articles as well. The second coder of American articles was the author, who is not a native speaker but has been educated in English speaking countries. Reliability Inter coder reliability was measured using Scott’s (1955) measure of reliability. This measure was chosen because it is the most frequently used when measuring reliability for two coders. In the French case, 19% of the text population was double-coded. In the American case the figure was 49%. In the French case, reliability for frame, source, section and existence of nationalist narrative were .79, .70, .86 and .81 respectively. In the American case, the reliability for frame, source and section was .61, .59 and .80 respectively. Although reliability measures for the American case are relatively low, the decision to continue with the analysis was made based on the position that frame and source are relatively complex variables that could be considered projective 14 , and thus high levels of agreement between two coders are sometimes difficult to achieve. It is also possible that the author in his role as coder had a more difficult task of objectively analyzing the data. Results Both cases, French and American, were compared to each other in aggregate. Comparison within each case between different sources was not done, because of the small sample size. 14 The term is taken from Potter and Levine-Donnerstein (1999).

Reliability
Inter coder reliability was measured using Scott’s (1955) measure of reliability. This
measure was chosen because it is the most frequently used when measuring reliability for
two coders. In the French case, 19% of the text population was double-coded. In the
American case the figure was 49%. In the French case, reliability for frame, source,

Results
Both cases, French and American, were compared to each other in aggregate.
Comparison within each case between different sources was not done, because of the
small sample size.
