Unformatted Document Text:  19 coverage). Those cases are shown in Table 2 as the issues in the campaign. Table 2. Seconds of Television Coverage and Debates Content on Campaign Issues (Aggregate Data Base). Topic Total seconds of news coverage Total seconds for topics on debates Social Security 174 394 Education 303 622 Public Safety 62 160 Corruption 293 1123 Labor/Employment 202 501 Income Distribution 213 533 Institutional Change 177 1181 Culture 15 275 Note: Total seconds of news coverage for Institutional Change was calculated on a sub-sample of 10% of news casts. The total seconds of Institutional Change during the debate was based on the total sample. Table 2 indicates the correspondence between coverage of topics by the news media (in seconds) and discussion (in seconds) of those topics in the debate. This table was made with the aggregated data from the matrix of the original data. To correlate issue content in the news media with issue content in the debates, each issue was taken as a case, this explains the small size of the sample N=8. To test hypothesis 1, the 8 issues from table 2 were correlated to find a relationship between the news coverage and the debate content. The Pearson correlation coefficient on hypothesis 1 was + .62 (P = .05) N = 8; and the non-parametric Kendall´s Tau was + .57 (sig = .02) N = 8. Thus, Hypothesis 1 is confirmed according to the 95% decision rule (alpha < .05).
