Gender, Age and Personal Trait in
the Appeal of Violent versus Non-Violent Videos:
A China Study
Abstract
This study used experimental methodology to investigate children’s gender, age and
personal trait as antecedents in their selection of entertainment programs featuring violent versus
non-violent themes. Preschool boys and girls, aged four to six, were presented with videos and
were asked to pick the ones they would most like to view. Analyses of variance performed on the
video choice revealed strong gender difference in children’s partialities. This study contributes to
the literature by addressing, in behavioral terms, children’s attractions to different themes in
media entertainment, and by exploring individual differences in terms of gender, age and
personality in predicting the appeal of those themes.
