Proenvironmental behavior
Dunlap (1991) identifies two major types of proenvironmental behaviors: those
that focus on individual responsibility and those that emphasize political action.
Proenvironmental actions under individual responsibility include such things as the
purchase of ecologically friendly products, recycling, and energy-saving behaviors.
Political behaviors include attending meeting, writing a letter, signing a petition, and
contributing money to environmental organizations. In this study, environmentally
conscious action was assessed through 16 different behaviors. The selected activities
were intended to reflect different degrees of individual effort in dealing with problems of
the environment. The respondents were asked to report the frequency with which they
had engaged in several environmental activities over the year. These items were
measured along a 5-point scale: “never” (1), “rarely” (2), “sometimes” (3), “often” (4),
“always” (5).
Data Analyses and Results
Overview
To understand interrelationships between the constructs of interest, a proposed
structural equation model was tested and retested with AMOS 4, using the two-step
