Analysis of Discourses Encompassing the 'Migrant Mother' Picture
Unformatted Document Text:  8 country. The magazines range from popular magazines such as Life and Look, to specialized journals such as agricultural journals. Although they do not carry all the mass media articles that made use of the FSA photographs, the scrapbooks have the broadest collection of source material. For the documentary photo-book genre, I chose one documentary photo-book containing the picture; Archibald MacLeish’s Land of the Free (1938). For the government public relations genre, I chose one government-sponsored exhibition material including the picture, An Exhibition on Migratory Farm Workers (1941). Lists of government publications are mostly from a section of ‘government publications’ in Penelope Dixon's (1983) Photographers of the Farm Security Administration: An Annotated Bibliography 1930-1980. For the art photography genre, two exhibit materials were chosen: the First International Exposition of Photography (1938) and the traveling exhibit of the Museum of Modern Art -- Documents of America: The Rural Scene (January 1939 to February 1940). The First International Exposition of Photography was held at the Grand Central Palace in New York in April 1938, and the Museum of Modern Art circulated a selection of the photographs to various cities. The information of exhibitions making use of the FSA photographs comes mainly from the RA's First Annual Report (1936) and Dixon's (1983) book mentioned earlier. 2) Data Analyzing A qualitative analysis was conducted. First, I examined the internal context of the photograph -- how the meaning of the photograph is altered by its accompanying captions, texts and other photographs. In documentary photography words are vital because they offer the reader essential information that is not always easily gleaned from the image. It is particularly important to take a look at the written context because most of the FSA photographs were reproduced in integrated text-image formats. Then, I analyzed how the meaning of the same image undergoes a transformation when it is presented within the contexts of a different genre. 4. Analysis and Results First of all, I found that the captions of the Migrant Mother picture used in various media are different each other regardless of genres. In addition, written texts encompassing the picture are also different each other. That is, even though various media made use of the same photographic image, they used respectively different caption and written text. The following section will discuss how the Migrant Mother picture was used in
