Figure 2: Sign-interpretation- object Relationship First trichotomony : qualisign, sinsign, legisign According to Peirce a sign may be divided into three concepts.; a qualisign, a sinsign or a legisign. A qualisign is a quality and simple possibility of sign existence. It cannot actually act as a sign until it is embodied; but the embodiment has nothing to do with its character as a sign. A sinsign is an actual existent thing or event which is a sign. A legisign is a law that is a sign. Every conventional sign is a legisign and has a general type. Each single instance of legisign is a replica. The replica is a sinsign (Peirce, 1955). Second trichotomony : icon, index, symbol Peirce’s second trichotomy of concepts is that a sign may be termed an Icon, an Index, or a Symbol. An icon is a sign which refers to the object that it denotes merely by virtue of characters of own, and which it possesses, just the same, whether any such object actually
