Auditory Interfaces as a Sign System: An Application of Peircean Semiotics to Human-Computer Interaction

Thirdness is mode of being which consists in the fact that future facts of secondness will take on a determinate general character (Peirce, 1955). In other word thirdness is that which is as it is as mediate between two others. It is category of meditation, habit, memory, continuity, synthesis, communication, representation, and sign. The first category is such as red, bitter, tedious, hard, heartrending, noble. Most of us say they are not quality of thing but just sense. According to Peirce they are sense-qualities that are made by sense and wherever there is a phenomenon there is a quality. We may not realize the qualities in phenomenon because they have not perfect identities but only likeness, or partial identities. The musical sound is in this category because it is sense-quality adapted by sense systemically. It is in itself without help from the others but partial determination (Peirce, 1955). Firstness is predominant in feeling and is emotional far from objective perception, will, and thought. The second category of elements of phenomena comprises the actual facts. The qualities are general, vague and potential. But an occurrence is perfectly individual. The qualities are concerned in facts but they do not make up facts. We do not see facts and qualities in a same form. There is reaction in actual sensation but qualities cannot react (Peirce, 1955). Secondness is predominant in real which is active and occurs from recognition as something other. The third category of elements of phenomena consists of what we call laws when we contemplate them from the outside only, but which when we see both sides of the shield we call thoughts.
