(1993) demonstrated that a constructed week sampling was superior to both a random sample and a consecutive day sampling for newspaper content analysis. Based on the available literature and context of Chinese newspaper, 3 constructed week, 21 issues from 3 systematic sampling months in 2001 were sampled, which resulted in 380 news items. Each news story with a highline and clarified geographic origin is considered as a coding unit. This excluded worldwide overview or the news without identifying geographic origin. There are 350 coding units in the study. Coding: Theoretical distinction between foreign news and foreign relations news is made based on Chang’s previous study. According to Chang, foreign news refers to activities of foreign individuals, groups, or other entities in any foreign country but it doesn’t involve China. Foreign policy news refers to international relations and foreign policy activities between China and another country. In the former (foreign news), China reported the news without itself being in the picture while for the latter, China acted as a participant rather than an observer. Chang contended, “Without such differentiation between the two concepts, the nuances in the differing world view may be lost” (Chang T. K, 1994, Chang, T.K. & Chen, Y., 2000). To answer two research questions, the coding procedure identified and recorded the two elements: primary country involved (geographic origin) and news themes (topic category). Each news item might be coded more than one time regarding the countries mainly involved, however, it can only be coded in one theme under the country category. If a story contained two or more themes, the story was coded under the main theme. If two or more themes were considered to have relatively equivalent importance, the first
