Violence and Peace in the Print Media: News Discourse and Social Construction of Reality in Colombia

Toward a proposal for news coverage of armed conflict 16 The results of this research underline the need to widen the range of facts that are incorporated to the news discourse in order to provide greater context about the conflict. The challenge then is to cover process of violence and peace with a more subjective journalism, subjectivity understood as an honest effort to interpret facts with more rigor without entering in the realm of opinion. The key is for the journalist to provide readers with more leads for association of facts, events, etc., leading to greater comprehension of the complexity of the conflict. The figure below attempts to integrate elements from both theoretical constructs used in this research, and it is the result of the analysis of the news discourse discussed above.
