Violence and Peace in the Print Media: News Discourse and Social Construction of Reality in Colombia
Unformatted Document Text:  ACONTECIMIENTO INFORMACIÓN CRONOLOGÍA BÁSICA – ROLES This scheme is based upon van Dijk’s model. While taking into account van Dijk’s emphasis on providing context with respect to the main events of the story, it is suggested that the model should make permanente use of comments –in the form of verbal reactions and conclusions- in the coverage of the armed conflict. Another element is to provide context to the verbal reactions. News discourse should include complete information about those who provide verbal reactions and how they are related to the store. Thus, the audience will have more elements to decide what and how much of the news discourse they will incorporate what Berger and Luckmann call people’s “wealth of social knowledge”. Toward an agenda for the analysis of coverage of the armed conflict The resolution of Colombia’s armed conflict will take a long time. However, the media will continue to play a very important role in the social construction of the reality associated with the conflict. While the results of this study point out important aspects of this process, they also serve as a starting point for future academic work that could further contribute to the debate and to a better understanding of the role of the media. Four lines of work are proposed for the immediate future: a. To analyze the social construction of reality generated by the media from the audience’s perspective. b. To carry out ethnographic studies that could provide greater understanding of the journalistic routines that lead to a specific social construction of the reality of the conflict. c. To analyze more in-depth the relationship established between the two theoretical postures used in this study. d. To carry out research that could validate the proposed scheme for news coverage of armed conflicts, which could have implications for news coverage in other contexts.

BÁSICA – ROLES

This scheme is based upon van Dijk’s model. While taking into account van Dijk’s
emphasis on providing context with respect to the main events of the story, it is suggested
that the model should make permanente use of comments –in the form of verbal reactions
and conclusions- in the coverage of the armed conflict. Another element is to provide
context to the verbal reactions. News discourse should include complete information
about those who provide verbal reactions and how they are related to the store. Thus, the
audience will have more elements to decide what and how much of the news discourse
they will incorporate what Berger and Luckmann call people’s “wealth of social
knowledge”.

Toward an agenda for the analysis of coverage of the armed conflict
The resolution of Colombia’s armed conflict will take a long time. However, the media
will continue to play a very important role in the social construction of the reality
associated with the conflict. While the results of this study point out important aspects of
this process, they also serve as a starting point for future academic work that could
further contribute to the debate and to a better understanding of the role of the media.
Four lines of work are proposed for the immediate future:
a. To analyze the social construction of reality generated by the media from the
audience’s perspective.
b. To carry out ethnographic studies that could provide greater understanding of the
journalistic routines that lead to a specific social construction of the reality of the
conflict.
c. To analyze more in-depth the relationship established between the two theoretical
postures used in this study.
d. To carry out research that could validate the proposed scheme for news coverage
of armed conflicts, which could have implications for news coverage in other
contexts.
