Exploring the Boundaries of Heroes, Celebrities and Role Models after 9/11: Lessons from Shanksville
Unformatted Document Text:  Lessons from Shanksville p. 11 Americans, and the rest other minorities. About 81 percent of the sample expressed Christian beliefs, 2.3 percent reported no religious beliefs, and the rest had various types of religious beliefs. Nearly 32 percent of the respondents had a high school education, 25 percent had some college, and 33 percent had college degrees. Politically, 42 percent of the sample considered themselves to be conservative, 42 percent are moderates, and 16 percent identified themselves as liberal. About 63 percent of the sample is married. Measured variables. Identification with the passengers and crew (excluding the terrorists) was measured with five Likert-scale questionnaire items. An identification scale was produced, yielding a Cronbach alpha of .87. All other variables were measured with single questionnaire items. Demographics. Demographic information included questions about age, gender, cultural background, education, religious beliefs, political identity, and marital status. Analysis procedures Correlation analyses were conducted of the continuous variables of interest to screen for high correlations among the independent variables and to compute the reliability coefficient of the identification scale. No evidence of multicollinearity was found. Table 1 provides a correlation matrix of the major continuous variables used in the testing of the research questions and hypotheses. ------------------------------ Insert Table 1 about Here ------------------------------ Multiple regression analyses, t-tests, and Chi-square analyses were used to assess the hypothesized relationships and research questions.

coefficient of the identification scale. No evidence of multicollinearity was found. Table
